Tiffin Stage 2 English Intensive – Girls and Boys

This focused six-session English intensive is designed for pupils who have been invited to the Stage 2 entrance examinations for Tiffin School or The Tiffin Girls’ School.

Across 12 hours of specialist preparation, pupils will develop the comprehension, written-response and creative-writing skills required to approach the examination with greater confidence, accuracy and control.

What Each Session Includes

Each two-hour session will include:

• Approximately one hour of comprehension and written-response work

• Approximately one hour of creative writing

• A unique, exam-style writing prompt or task

• Practice completing work within strict time limits

• Guidance on planning, structure, vocabulary and technical accuracy

• A different focus and set of materials each day

Each session is self-contained, so pupils can benefit even if they are unable to attend every date. Pupils attending the complete course will receive a wider range of texts, question types and timed-writing practice.

Comprehension Preparation

Pupils will practise:

• Retrieving and selecting relevant evidence

• Inference and deduction

• Explaining vocabulary in context

• Analysing the effects of language and description

• Answering in clear, complete sentences

• Developing longer written responses

• Managing time and allocating marks effectively

Creative Writing Preparation

Pupils will complete one exam-style timed writing task during each session, using original prompts and tasks.

Teaching will focus on:

• Planning quickly and effectively

• Creating engaging openings

• Developing atmosphere, character and setting

• Organising ideas into a controlled structure

• Choosing ambitious but appropriate vocabulary

• Using punctuation and sentence structures accurately

• Reviewing and improving work within the available time

Any creative-writing homework issued during the course will be individually marked, with feedback provided to help pupils understand how to improve.

Additional Preparation for Tiffin School Boys

Alongside the shared comprehension and creative-writing preparation, boys applying to Tiffin School will receive targeted practice in the additional styles of written English question shown in the school’s illustrative material. These may include:

• Identifying and removing unnecessary words

• Rewriting sentences while preserving their meaning

• Explaining figurative expressions in their own words

• Responding accurately to unfamiliar language tasks

• Producing concise, precise written answers

Appropriate differentiated tasks will be provided so that both boys and girls receive preparation relevant to their chosen Tiffin school.

• Sunday 25 October 2026: 10.00 am–12.00 noon

Weekend Two

• Friday 30 October 2026: 6.00–8.00 pm

• Saturday 31 October 2026: 3.00–5.00 pm

• Sunday 1 November 2026: 10.00 am–12.00 noon
