Sutton Stage 2 English Intensive
Six Hours of Specialist Comprehension and Creative Writing Preparation
This focused three-day English intensive is designed for pupils preparing in anticipation of progressing to the second stage of the entrance process for any of the Sutton grammar schools.
Led by a qualified English teacher and experienced 11 Plus entrance-exam specialist, the course will develop the advanced comprehension and creative-writing skills required for written entrance examinations.
Each two-hour masterclass includes:
One hour of advanced comprehension
One hour of creative writing
A unique, exam-style timed writing task
Individual marking and constructive feedback

Three Standalone Masterclasses
Each session is a complete, standalone masterclass. Pupils may attend one, two or all three days without needing to have attended an earlier session.
Every day uses different comprehension passages, questions and creative-writing prompts. Pupils attending all three days will benefit from a broader range of practice without unnecessary repetition.
Day One: Evidence, Inference and Descriptive Writing
Friday 18 September: 6:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m.
The comprehension lesson will focus on understanding questions, selecting and embedding evidence, making thoughtful inferences and developing complete answers.
The creative-writing lesson will focus on generating ideas, planning effectively, creating an engaging opening and using purposeful description. Pupils will complete a unique, exam-style timed writing task.
Day Two: Language Analysis and Controlled Writing
Saturday 19 September: 3:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m.
The comprehension lesson will focus on vocabulary in context, identifying significant words and techniques, analysing language and explaining its effect on the reader.
The creative-writing lesson will focus on structure, paragraphing, sentence variety, ambitious vocabulary and accurate punctuation. Pupils will complete a different exam-style timed writing task.
Day Three: Exam Technique and Timed Practice
Sunday 20 September: 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
The comprehension lesson will focus on approaching an unfamiliar passage, answering a range of written questions and balancing speed, accuracy and depth.
The creative-writing lesson will focus on planning efficiently, developing a complete and cohesive response and editing work under timed conditions. Pupils will complete a third exam-style timed writing task.
Individual Marking and Feedback
Every creative-writing task issued during the course will be individually marked and returned with constructive feedback.
Pupils will be shown:
What they have done successfully
Which areas require further development
How to improve their ideas, structure and technical accuracy
What they should focus on before their entrance examinations
Who Is This Course For?
This intensive is suitable for Year 6 pupils who have completed the Sutton Selective Eligibility Test and wish to prepare in advance for a possible Stage 2 examination.
It supports preparation for the second-stage English assessments used by:
Wilson’s School
Wallington County Grammar School
Sutton Grammar School
Nonsuch High School for Girls
Wallington High School for Girls
Children do not need to have received their Stage 1 result before joining the course.
The course is also suitable for many independent-school entrance examinations that assess written comprehension, language analysis and creative writing.

Places are limited to ensure that pupils receive meaningful guidance and individual feedback.

Sutton Stage 2 English Intensive: Booking Policy
Please read the following information carefully before booking.
Booking and Payment
Full payment is required to secure a place.
Places are not reserved until payment has been received.
Bookings are for the named pupil and may not be transferred to another child without prior written agreement from South Croydon Tutors.
Parents booking one or two individual masterclasses should contact South Croydon Tutors directly to confirm availability before making payment.
Cancellations, Absences and Refunds
All bookings are final once payment has been received.
If a child is unable to attend any booked session for any reason, including illness, family commitments or a change of circumstances, no refund, partial refund, credit or transfer will be provided.
No refunds will be issued for missed sessions, late arrival or early departure.
Bookings may not be transferred to another child without prior written agreement from South Croydon Tutors.
If South Croydon Tutors cancels a session and cannot provide a suitable alternative, the fee paid for the affected session will be refunded.
This policy does not affect your statutory consumer rights.
Attendance Options

Parents must confirm their chosen attendance option when booking.
Any request to change between online and in-person attendance is subject to space and availability.
The full address or Zoom joining information will be provided to confirmed participants.
Online Attendance
Zoom links are for registered pupils only and must not be shared.
Parents are responsible for ensuring that pupils have a suitable device, a reliable internet connection and access to the required materials.
Pupils should join promptly with their correct name displayed.
Technical difficulties experienced by an individual pupil do not qualify for a refund.
Missed Sessions
Each masterclass is designed as a standalone session, allowing pupils to attend one, two or all three days.
Recordings are not guaranteed. If a pupil misses a booked session, any course materials may be shared where appropriate, but the lesson will not be repeated individually.
No refund, credit or alternative lesson will be provided for a missed session.
Creative-Writing Tasks and Feedback
Pupils will be given one unique, exam-style creative-writing task during each masterclass attended.
Each submitted task will be individually marked and returned with constructive feedback.
Work must be submitted in the requested format and by the deadline provided.
Late work may not be marked if it is submitted after the stated deadline.
Feedback is intended for the registered pupil and must not be copied, distributed or published without permission.
Course Materials
All course papers, teaching materials, writing prompts, exercises and model responses are for the registered pupil’s personal educational use only.
Materials must not be copied, shared, uploaded, sold, reproduced or distributed without written permission from South Croydon Tutors.
Pupil Conduct
Pupils are expected to:
Arrive promptly and be ready to learn
Follow instructions
Treat the tutor and other pupils respectfully
Participate appropriately in activities
Avoid disrupting the learning of others
South Croydon Tutors reserves the right to contact a parent or remove a pupil from a session if their behaviour seriously or repeatedly affects the learning, safety or wellbeing of others.
Fees will not normally be refunded in these circumstances.
Suitability of the Course
This intensive provides specialist preparation for Sutton Stage 2 and other written entrance examinations.
Participation does not guarantee that a pupil will qualify for Stage 2, pass an examination or receive an offer from a particular school.
Parents remain responsible for checking the current examination requirements of their chosen schools.
